It would require standards, code, wallets, hardware support, custody procedures, exchange systems, user action and a consensus path that the network accepts.

Which Parts of Bitcoin Could Quantum Computers Threaten?

Bitcoin relies on several cryptographic functions. Hash functions help link blocks, identify transactions and power proof-of-work mining. Public-key cryptography allows users to prove control of coins by producing digital signatures without revealing the private key itself.

A sufficiently powerful fault-tolerant quantum computer running Shor’s algorithm could, in theory, derive a private key from a corresponding public key for the elliptic-curve signature systems used by Bitcoin. That is the central concern. An attacker able to calculate the private key could create a valid signature and spend coins from the affected key.

Grover’s algorithm is relevant to hash functions, but it offers a quadratic rather than exponential speedup. In simplified terms, that could reduce the effective security margin of a hash function, but it does not instantly make proof of work obsolete or allow effortless rewriting of the chain. The signature problem is generally viewed as the more direct threat to ownership.

Bitcoin addresses do not all expose the same information at the same time. In common payment types, a public key may remain hidden behind a hash until the owner spends. Once a transaction reveals the public key, a future quantum attacker could theoretically target it. Some older address types and reused addresses already expose public keys. Taproot also places public keys directly in outputs. A March 2026 Bitcoin Improvement Proposal estimated that more than one-third of bitcoin had public keys revealed on-chain, although exact exposure depends on methodology and address behavior.

That does not mean one-third of the supply is currently vulnerable. The relevant machine does not exist. It means that a future migration plan cannot focus only on new transactions. Developers must decide how to handle already exposed outputs, dormant balances and coins that may never move voluntarily.

Why “Quantum-Proof Bitcoin” Is Not a Single Software Update

A post-quantum signature scheme would need to satisfy several competing requirements. It must resist known quantum attacks, produce signatures and public keys that are practical for a blockchain, be implementable in wallets and hardware devices, support verification at scale and avoid introducing new weaknesses through immature code.

Post-quantum signatures are often larger than the elliptic-curve signatures Bitcoin uses today. Larger data increases block-space consumption and can affect fees, validation and bandwidth. Some schemes depend on different assumptions or have state-management requirements that complicate wallet design. A theoretically secure algorithm can still fail through implementation errors, side channels or poor key management.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized its first three post-quantum cryptography standards in August 2024. They include ML-KEM for general encryption and ML-DSA and SLH-DSA for digital signatures. Those standards provide a stronger foundation for government and commercial migration, but Bitcoin does not automatically adopt federal standards. Protocol developers must evaluate which approaches fit Bitcoin’s architecture, incentives and conservative security culture.

The U.S. government has accelerated its own transition. A June 2026 executive order directed federal agencies to identify vulnerable systems and move high-value assets toward post-quantum protection on an accelerated schedule. Government deadlines do not predict the arrival date of a cryptographically relevant quantum computer. They reflect the principle that migration should begin before an attacker exists, particularly because encrypted information can be collected now and attacked later.

BIP-360, BIP-361 and the Difference Between a Proposal and Consensus

Two Bitcoin Improvement Proposals have become focal points in the quantum-readiness debate. BIP-360 proposes a post-quantum payment path using a hash-based commitment structure. BIP-361 addresses how the network might eventually discourage or restrict spending from outputs considered vulnerable to quantum key recovery.

The proposals explore different layers of the problem. One concerns how users can create and spend from safer outputs. The other confronts the politically and ethically harder question of legacy coins. If a future attacker can derive private keys from exposed public keys, should the protocol continue to recognize those signatures as valid? Freezing vulnerable outputs could protect coins from theft but also prevent legitimate owners from spending. Allowing all signatures preserves current rules but might permit a quantum attacker to capture dormant balances.

Possible approaches discussed in the wider community include voluntary migration, warnings and fee incentives, staged deprecation of vulnerable script types, proof-of-possession mechanisms, temporary restrictions, recovery procedures and, in the most controversial scenarios, freezing or burning coins that fail to migrate. Every option changes incentives and creates edge cases.

Publication in the BIP repository does not indicate approval, adoption or network consensus. BIPs are design documents. They can be revised, rejected, superseded or remain dormant for years. Bitcoin’s resistance to rapid change is frustrating when preparation feels urgent, but that conservatism is also a security feature. A rushed quantum solution could create a nearer-term vulnerability while trying to solve a distant one.

How Long Does Bitcoin Have?

No responsible analyst can provide a precise countdown. Quantum hardware announcements often refer to physical qubits, logical qubits, error rates or demonstrations that are not directly comparable. Breaking Bitcoin’s signatures would require a fault-tolerant system of a scale and reliability far beyond current public machines, plus enough speed to exploit a useful target.

Estimates vary widely because they depend on assumptions about hardware progress, error correction, algorithmic improvements and resource requirements. Some experts regard a cryptographically relevant machine as decades away; others argue that preparation timelines should be measured in years because engineering progress can be nonlinear. The correct investment conclusion is not to attach a probability to one dramatic date. It is to monitor whether the ecosystem is building credible migration options while there is still time to test them.

Quantum uncertainty also differs from an ordinary market risk. A rate decision can move prices today, but its mechanism is familiar. A quantum breakthrough could alter the security assumptions of many systems at once, including banking, government communications, cloud infrastructure and blockchains. Bitcoin would not be uniquely exposed. It would, however, face a distinctive coordination challenge because no central operator can compel every holder to update.

What ETF and Corporate Investors Should Ask

Investors who own spot Bitcoin ETFs do not manage private keys directly. The fund’s custodian does. That simplifies the holder’s operational responsibilities but does not eliminate protocol risk. A serious quantum threat would require custodians, ETF sponsors, exchanges, market makers and authorized participants to coordinate migration and disclosure.

Questions for institutional investors include whether custodians are following post-quantum research, how they would migrate addresses, whether cold-storage systems can support new signature schemes, how insurance policies define cryptographic failure, what governance procedures apply to emergency protocol changes and how funds would handle forks or temporary market disruption.

Corporate treasury holders face similar questions. Strategy and other public companies disclose Bitcoin as a balance-sheet asset, but the operational risk resides in custody arrangements, key management and the underlying network. The participation of Strategy, BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Coinbase and Anchorage Digital in the consortium suggests that large stakeholders recognize the need for preparation.

That participation should not be interpreted as evidence that a crisis is imminent. It is better understood as a maturation signal. Institutions that expect to remain involved in Bitcoin for decades must fund research into low-probability, high-impact threats before those threats become urgent.

The Governance Risk Inside the Security Solution

Corporate funding creates its own risk. A handful of large firms could favor proposals that work well for institutional custody but impose costs on individual users, miners or smaller wallet providers. Grant recipients may feel pressure to prioritize donor interests even without explicit instructions. Funding could become concentrated around fashionable topics while routine maintenance receives less attention.

Transparency is the best defense. Consortium members should disclose grants, selection criteria, conflicts and project outcomes. Developers should remain free to criticize funders. Independent review should be financed across competing approaches rather than only one preferred design. The consortium’s statement that it will not direct Bitcoin protocol development is useful, but credibility will depend on behavior over time.

The broader lesson is that decentralization does not eliminate institutions; it changes their role. Bitcoin can remain permissionless while exchanges, custodians, miners, developers, asset managers and researchers specialize around it. The test is whether any participant can impose rules unilaterally. Funding open-source work is compatible with decentralization when adoption remains voluntary and the technical process stays open.

Ethereum ETF Inflows Beat Bitcoin: Rotation Signal or One-Week Noise?

The ETF data highlighted in the CoinDesk program provided a more immediate window into institutional behavior. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $33.8 million of net inflows during the five trading days ended July 24, 2026. It was their third consecutive positive week, but the headline disguised a sharp reversal: the funds collected nearly $500 million through Wednesday and then lost roughly $465 million on Thursday and Friday.

Spot Ether ETFs attracted approximately $103.9 million during the same week, also their third consecutive week of inflows. That was more than three times the Bitcoin total even though Ether funds manage far less money. Over the three-week period, Ether products drew an amount of new capital approaching the Bitcoin funds’ intake, according to the flow data discussed on the program.

The comparison is notable but not sufficient to declare a durable “altcoin season.” Weekly ETF flows are volatile. A small number of large creations or redemptions can change the result, and the Bitcoin total was unusually low after late-week withdrawals. Trading volume in the Bitcoin funds also fell to about $8.05 billion for the week, the lowest volume for a complete five-day week since October 2024. Low volume can make a modest flow difference appear more decisive than it is.

Three Possible Explanations for Ether’s Relative Strength

The first interpretation is simple portfolio rotation. Investors who already have Bitcoin exposure may be adding Ether as a second institutional-grade crypto allocation. Spot ETFs make that trade easier for advisers and funds that cannot or do not want to use exchanges and self-custody.

The second interpretation is a recovery trade. Ether underperformed Bitcoin through important parts of the previous cycle, and investors may see it as a higher-beta asset with more room to rebound if crypto sentiment improves. In that case, ETF demand reflects relative valuation and positioning rather than a fundamental change in network activity.

The third interpretation is a bet on Ethereum’s utility. Ethereum is the leading settlement environment for stablecoins, decentralized finance and tokenized real-world assets. Schwab’s research estimated that approximately half of Ethereum fee activity over the preceding year was associated with stablecoins, about 20% with lending and about 20% with liquid staking, leaving a smaller share for trading and infrastructure. Those figures support the idea that Ethereum demand can be linked to financial activity beyond speculative token turnover.

Ethereum’s own institutional materials reported that, as of March 2026, the network hosted approximately $159 billion in stablecoins and more than $15.2 billion in tokenized real-world assets. The measurements depend on definitions and change quickly, but they illustrate the scale of dollar-denominated and asset-tokenization activity using Ethereum infrastructure.

Why Bitcoin Momentum Still Matters for Ether

Ferraioli’s caution is important. In previous deep crypto recoveries, Bitcoin often leads for 12 to 16 months. Other assets can rally sharply, but those moves may not persist unless Bitcoin establishes a durable upward trend. Bitcoin is the largest, most liquid and most widely institutionalized crypto asset. It often acts as the ecosystem’s collateral base and sentiment anchor.

A sustained Ether rally therefore requires more than one favorable ETF week. Investors should look for several forms of confirmation:

  • Persistent net inflows rather than isolated weekly spikes
  • Rising network activity tied to stablecoins, lending, tokenization and payments rather than only meme-coin trading
  • Improving fee economics without congestion that drives users away
  • Healthy decentralized-finance collateral and lending activity
  • Clearer regulation for staking, tokenized securities and stablecoins
  • Bitcoin trading above key investor cost bases with less forced selling

The last point connects ETF flows to on-chain market structure. Schwab estimated that the average cost basis for U.S. exchange-traded-product owners was around $83,000 and the average for investors excluding miners was about $78,000 at the relevant measurement date. With Bitcoin below those levels in late July, many recent institutional buyers remained underwater. Rallies into those zones could encounter selling from investors seeking to reduce losses. A sustained move above them would indicate that demand had absorbed that supply.

ETF Flows Are Useful but Incomplete

Daily ETF flow tables are among the cleanest publicly visible measures of U.S. institutional demand, but they do not capture the entire market. Bitcoin and Ether trade globally, around the clock and through spot venues, futures, options, private funds, trusts, corporate treasuries and over-the-counter desks. A redemption can reflect arbitrage or portfolio rebalancing rather than a long-term bearish view.

ETF flows also say little about who ultimately owns the shares. Registered investment advisers, hedge funds, retail brokerage clients and market-neutral traders can use the same product for different purposes. Form 13F filings provide delayed snapshots of some institutional positions, but they do not reveal every holder or the economic hedge attached to a position.

The best way to use ETF data is as one part of a dashboard. Persistent inflows accompanied by rising volume, improving spot prices, healthier derivatives and stronger network activity are more persuasive than any one series alone. Ether’s July outperformance is a signal worth watching, not proof that capital has permanently moved beyond Bitcoin.

Is $95,000 a Fair Value for Bitcoin?

Ferraioli offered one of the program’s most attention-grabbing numbers when he said Bitcoin’s fair value could be around $95,000. He explicitly avoided calling it a six-month price target. The figure came from a production-cost framework: less efficient miners were estimated to face all-in costs near $95,000 at the cycle peak, while the most efficient fleets were producing closer to $60,000.

Production cost can provide a useful anchor because Bitcoin is created through a competitive mining process. Miners invest in specialized hardware, power, facilities, cooling, employees, financing and maintenance. The protocol cuts the block subsidy approximately every four years, reducing the number of new coins issued for the same amount of computational competition. If demand is stable or rising while new supply growth slows, the economics can support higher prices over time.

But production cost is not the same as intrinsic value. Bitcoin has no legal obligation to trade above the cost of mining. If price falls, inefficient miners can shut down, machines can be repriced, energy contracts can change and network difficulty can adjust. The cost curve moves toward the market rather than imposing a permanent floor.

Commodity comparisons are also imperfect. Oil, copper and wheat are consumed by industries and households. Bitcoin’s demand is driven by its perceived usefulness as a scarce digital asset, settlement network, collateral, speculative instrument and potential store of value. Mining cost affects supply behavior, but demand determines whether the market will pay the cost.

What the Cost Framework Does Explain

The framework helps identify stress. When Bitcoin trades below the cost of a large portion of the mining industry, miners with weak balance sheets may sell reserves, refinance debt, curtail operations or pivot power capacity toward artificial-intelligence computing. Efficient miners may gain market share as less efficient competitors leave.

It also explains why price can move quickly when supply is constrained. New issuance is small relative to the outstanding stock, and many holders do not trade frequently. If ETF demand, corporate purchases or a regulatory catalyst increases incremental buying, the available liquid supply may be insufficient at the current price. The move from roughly $60,000 to $83,000 earlier in 2026 demonstrated that relatively modest changes in net demand can reprice the market rapidly.

The $95,000 figure is therefore better understood as a scenario anchor. It suggests where Bitcoin might trade if demand recovered enough to support the economics of less efficient production and if institutional adoption regained momentum. It does not establish a guaranteed destination or timing.

Four Valuation Lenses Investors Can Combine

No single Bitcoin valuation method is universally accepted. A more robust approach combines several imperfect lenses:

  • Production cost: estimates the economics of creating new supply and identifies miner stress.
  • Investor cost basis: shows price zones where large groups of holders may be in profit or loss.
  • Network and settlement activity: examines usage, transaction value, fees and long-term holder behavior.
  • Liquidity and portfolio demand: measures ETF flows, corporate treasury demand, stablecoin liquidity, derivatives positioning and global risk appetite.

Each can fail in isolation. Production cost adjusts. Cost basis can become irrelevant during powerful trends. Network activity can be distorted by internal exchange transfers. ETF demand can reverse. Valuation in this market is better treated as a probability range under different adoption and liquidity scenarios than as a precise discounted-cash-flow calculation.

Perpetual Futures Are Pulling Traditional Assets Into Crypto’s 24/7 Market Structure

The final major theme in the CoinDesk program was not about Bitcoin’s price at all. It was about the way crypto-native derivatives are spreading into oil, equity indexes, foreign exchange, single-name stocks and private-company exposure. Griffin Sears, Head of Derivatives at FalconX, argued that perpetual futures are becoming an important bridge between digital-asset infrastructure and traditional markets.

A perpetual future, commonly called a “perp,” is a derivative contract designed to track an underlying asset without a fixed expiration date. Traditional futures expire on scheduled dates. A trader who wants to maintain the position must close or settle the expiring contract and open a later one. That process creates roll costs, operational work and liquidity fragmentation across contract months.

A perp concentrates activity into one continuing contract. Exchanges use a funding mechanism to keep the perp’s price near the underlying reference price. When the contract trades above spot, long positions generally pay short positions; when it trades below spot, shorts may pay longs. Funding incentives encourage traders to take the side that narrows the gap.

The design became dominant in crypto because Bitcoin and other digital assets trade continuously. There is no natural Friday close, weekend pause or quarterly delivery cycle. Perps provide leverage and hedging without forcing traders to roll contracts every month.

Why the Product Is Attractive

Perpetual futures solve several real market problems. They centralize liquidity, allow continuous exposure and make it easier to express long or short views. For an institutional trader, one deep contract may be more efficient than a ladder of monthly futures. For an exchange, the product can generate continuous fees and funding activity.

The advantages become especially visible during weekend shocks. Traditional commodity and equity venues close for significant periods while geopolitical and corporate news continues. If oil prices are expected to move after an escalation in the Middle East, a crypto-native oil perp can provide a place to hedge before conventional futures reopen.

That does not mean the perp is identical to the underlying commodity contract. Its price depends on the exchange’s index, oracle, collateral rules, liquidity and counterparties. During stress, a crypto venue may diverge from the next available price on a traditional exchange. Traders gain continuous access but accept a different bundle of risks.

The Weekend Oil Example

Sears cited billions of dollars of weekend trading in oil perpetual futures when conflict in the Middle East escalated and traditional commodity exchanges were closed. The episode demonstrated latent demand for continuous hedging. A global macro fund with energy exposure does not stop bearing risk because the New York trading day ends.

Weekend pricing can also serve as an information market. Traders collectively estimate where oil should open once the primary futures venue returns. The perp may help institutions adjust risk or at least observe sentiment. Its price is not an authoritative settlement value, however. Thin weekend liquidity, high leverage and oracle design can create volatility that does not persist into the regulated benchmark market.

The institutional use case will depend on whether these contracts can provide sufficient depth without exposing firms to unacceptable legal, custody and counterparty risk. Large funds generally need enforceable agreements, reliable margin processes, independent pricing, audited controls and clarity about bankruptcy treatment. Crypto venues have improved, but the failure of major exchanges in previous cycles remains part of every risk committee’s memory.

Tokenized Stocks and Private-Company Exposure Are Not Always Stock Ownership

Perps and tokenized products are also being used to create economic exposure to public and private companies. That trend requires precise language. A token or perp referencing a stock may not represent a share registered in the investor’s name. It may provide only a contractual return linked to a price index. The holder may lack voting rights, dividend rights, inspection rights and the protections associated with direct ownership.

Private-company products are even more complex. Before an initial public offering, there may be no continuous public benchmark. A SpaceX-linked perp or token can be based on private-market transactions, dealer marks, prediction mechanisms or exchange methodology. It may allow speculation on an expected valuation without delivering actual SpaceX shares.

The distinction matters when marketing uses familiar company names. Investors should ask what legal claim the product creates, who holds any backing asset, how the reference price is calculated, whether redemption is possible, what happens at an IPO or acquisition and which regulator has jurisdiction.

Tokenized exposure can broaden access, but it can also recreate the economic risk of a security without the governance and disclosure rights of a security. That tension is one reason the CLARITY Act’s treatment of tokenized securities is important. The Senate text preserves the principle that putting a security on a blockchain does not stop it from being a security.

Traditional Exchanges Are Moving Toward Longer Hours

The rise of crypto-native venues is pressuring incumbent market infrastructure to extend trading. NYSE Arca has described a plan to operate approximately 23 hours a day, five days a week, with a target launch of December 6, 2026, subject to regulatory and industry readiness. The proposed schedule would run from Sunday evening through Friday evening with a one-hour technical pause each day.

Intercontinental Exchange, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, has also been developing a platform for 24/7 trading and on-chain settlement of tokenized securities, according to Reuters. The project contemplates fractional shares, instant settlement and stablecoin-based funding, subject to regulatory approval.

Robinhood launched the mainnet of Robinhood Chain in July 2026 after earlier introducing a public testnet. The Ethereum layer-two network is designed for tokenized assets and financial applications, including lending and perpetual futures. Robinhood’s strategy reflects a broader competitive thesis: the winning brokerage may be the one that combines familiar retail access with blockchain-based settlement and around-the-clock products.

These projects do not mean the entire U.S. stock market will become continuously tradable overnight. The exchange is only one part of the system. Brokerages, market makers, securities information processors, clearing agencies, transfer agents, custodians, banks and regulators must all support longer hours.

The Banking-Rail Problem

Traditional finance still relies on business-day processes. Bank transfers, margin calls, collateral movements and settlement systems may pause or operate with reduced capacity on weekends. A market can quote prices continuously while its cash and collateral rails remain intermittent. That mismatch creates liquidity and credit risk.

Stablecoins and tokenized deposits offer one possible solution because they can move on-chain at any hour. But using them for institutional settlement raises questions about issuer risk, reserves, redemption, legal finality, anti-money-laundering compliance and access. A dollar token is not automatically equivalent to a deposit at the trader’s bank.

Prime-brokerage and over-the-counter agreements may also assume that margin calls occur on business days. A 24/7 market can generate large obligations on Saturday night. Institutions need contractual authority, staff, systems and liquid collateral to respond. Technology is only part of the transition; legal documentation and operational culture have to change.

What Could Go Wrong in a 24/7 Market?

Continuous trading reduces the gap between news and market access, but it removes the natural pauses that allow participants to reconcile positions, repair systems and reconsider risk. Several vulnerabilities become more important:

  • Thin liquidity: Overnight and weekend books can be shallow, causing large price moves from relatively small orders.
  • Oracle failure: A perp depends on reference prices. Bad or manipulated data can trigger liquidations.
  • Leverage cascades: Automated liquidation can amplify moves when human market makers are less active.
  • Collateral mismatch: Traders may owe margin when bank funding is unavailable.
  • Smart-contract risk: On-chain markets can lose funds through coding errors or governance attacks.
  • Legal uncertainty: Cross-border venues may not provide the protections an institution expects under U.S. law.
  • Fragmented prices: Multiple tokenized and derivative versions of the same asset can trade at different values.
  • Operational fatigue: Firms must staff risk, compliance and technology functions continuously.

Market pauses are not purely obsolete friction. They can serve as circuit breakers for people and systems. The future is likely to combine longer access with carefully designed auctions, volatility controls, maintenance windows and collateral rules rather than eliminating every boundary.

The CFTC’s Role and the Regulatory Direction

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is central because perpetual futures are derivatives. The agency has been examining how blockchain, smart contracts and continuous collateral management can change trading, clearing and settlement. A June 2026 filing involving a continuously listed Hyperliquid-linked contract illustrated ongoing experimentation within U.S. regulatory structures.

One filing does not constitute blanket approval of every perp offered globally. Many crypto perpetuals remain unavailable to ordinary U.S. customers or are offered by offshore venues. Product classification depends on the contract, platform and customer. The CFTC, SEC, state regulators and banking agencies can all become relevant.

The CLARITY Act could reduce some jurisdictional uncertainty, but derivatives would still require specialized oversight. A digital commodity spot market and a leveraged perpetual contract referencing that commodity are not the same product. Institutional adoption will depend on whether regulated venues can reproduce the liquidity and flexibility of offshore markets while meeting U.S. customer-protection and capital standards.

Why Perps Matter to Bitcoin Even When the Underlying Is Oil or SpaceX

The expansion of perps validates a core claim made by the crypto industry: blockchains can support financial markets that operate continuously with programmable collateral and near-instant transfers. If traditional assets increasingly use crypto-native rails, demand may grow for stablecoins, custody, oracle networks, layer-two systems and digital collateral.

Bitcoin does not necessarily capture all of that economic activity. Ethereum, Solana, Robinhood Chain and specialized trading networks may benefit more directly from tokenized securities and smart-contract applications. Bitcoin can still benefit indirectly if the migration legitimizes digital assets, increases institutional comfort with on-chain settlement and expands the pool of firms building crypto infrastructure.

There is also a competitive risk. If investors can gain efficient, leveraged exposure to commodities, equities and private companies on-chain, speculative capital may rotate away from Bitcoin. The digital-asset market will have to compete for attention with tokenized versions of nearly every financial asset. Bitcoin’s advantage is not that it is the only thing that trades 24/7. It is its scarcity, liquidity, decentralization and established monetary narrative.

How the Four Themes Fit Together

At first glance, the Federal Reserve, the CLARITY Act, quantum computing and perpetual futures appear to be separate stories. They operate on different timelines and involve different institutions. Together, however, they describe Bitcoin’s transition from an outsider asset into a component of the financial system.
