The previous outlook came from Palantir’s first-quarter 2026 earnings release. The new outlook implies approximately 82% full-year revenue growth from the $4.475 billion reported in 2025. That is not simply a continuation of the second-quarter rate, because the comparison base rises through the year. Yet the metric should not be interpreted as an accounting standard or a universal valuation formula. Companies use different profitability components in Rule of 40 calculations. Some use free-cash-flow margin; others use EBITDA margin or operating margin. Palantir uses adjusted operating margin, which excludes stock-based compensation and related employer payroll taxes. Cross-company comparisons can therefore be misleading unless the definitions are normalized.

Those margins establish that the quarter was highly profitable under standard accounting.
The difference between GAAP and adjusted operating income was still meaningful. Adjusted operating income of $1.194 billion exceeded GAAP operating income by approximately $282 million. Most of that difference came from $265 million of stock-based compensation, with the remainder primarily related to employer payroll taxes associated with equity awards.
Stock-based compensation increased from $160 million in the year-earlier quarter. In absolute dollars, that is a 66% increase. A bank may need to prove that customer data is protected and model decisions are reviewable. A healthcare organization may need strict access controls and a complete audit trail. Palantir’s ability to deploy across different infrastructure environments and preserve granular permissions addresses those concerns.
For governments, sovereignty has an additional national-security dimension. A defense ministry may require software that can operate on sovereign infrastructure, at the tactical edge or across classified networks. It may want control over which models are used and how data is shared with allies. Palantir’s government experience and Apollo deployment layer make it a credible supplier for those use cases.
Yet national sovereignty can also produce a preference for domestic technology. European governments that want less dependence on American platforms may choose local vendors even when Palantir offers strong technical controls. Reuters’ reporting on France’s DGSI illustrates that risk. Palantir can sell software that gives customers more control while still being viewed as a U.S. supplier subject to American political and legal influence.
The commercial opportunity is therefore broad but not frictionless. Sovereignty increases the importance of Palantir’s capabilities, while procurement policy and industrial strategy can limit the company’s access to some markets. The net effect will vary by country, agency and application.
The Government Business Carries Strategic Advantages and Political Risk
Palantir’s origins in national-security work created capabilities that are difficult to reproduce quickly. Classified deployments, complex procurement rules, security clearances and mission-critical integrations form barriers to entry. A new AI startup can build an impressive demonstration but cannot instantly replicate years of trust, certifications and operational experience.
Government relationships can also produce durable revenue because systems become embedded in workflows and accumulate integrations over time. Replacing them may require retraining users, rebuilding interfaces and accepting operational risk. This does not make contracts permanent—many government agreements can be terminated for convenience—but it can make a successful deployment difficult to displace.
The same business exposes Palantir to public scrutiny. The company works in defense, intelligence, immigration, law enforcement and other areas where technology can affect civil liberties and human rights. Contract awards can become political issues, and changes in administration or policy can alter priorities. Litigation, procurement protests and reputational pressure can delay or limit deployments.
Government growth can also be lumpy. A large award may include options that are never exercised. Revenue recognition may occur over time and depend on performance obligations. Budget disputes or continuing resolutions can slow new work. Palantir’s reported total contract value therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed backlog.
Reuters reported that Palantir and defense-technology company Anduril were working together on software related to the U.S. Golden Dome missile-defense initiative. The opportunity highlights Palantir’s position at the intersection of software, autonomy and defense modernization. It also illustrates why geopolitical spending can support growth while increasing the company’s political visibility.
Commercial Growth Reduces—but Does Not Eliminate—Concentration Risk
Palantir’s 2025 annual report showed that no single customer represented at least 10% of annual revenue, an improvement from the concentration often associated with government contractors. The company now serves a wider mixture of public and private organizations. That diversification reduces the risk that one contract loss would transform the entire income statement.
There are still forms of concentration that matter. The United States accounts for most revenue and an even larger share of current growth. Government and defense remain material. One customer represented 25% of accounts receivable at the end of 2025, which shows that payment timing can be concentrated even when revenue is not. Large deals can make quarterly contract metrics volatile.
Commercial customers may also be concentrated by industry or by their ability to support complex deployments. Palantir’s platform is most compelling where data fragmentation, operational complexity, regulation and decision value are high. That naturally favors large organizations. Expanding into smaller companies would require a lower-cost, more standardized delivery model than the high-touch approach for which Palantir is known.
Competition Is Broader Than a List of Software Rivals
Palantir competes with major cloud providers, data-platform companies, enterprise software vendors, government contractors, systems integrators, specialized AI startups and customer-built internal systems. The competitive question is not simply whether another company has a similar product menu. It is whether a customer can assemble an acceptable alternative from several components.
A large corporation might store data in a cloud warehouse, use a separate governance platform, license models from multiple providers, hire a consulting firm and build workflow applications internally. That approach can preserve flexibility and avoid dependence on one vendor. It can also create integration cost, inconsistent permissions and unclear accountability when a system fails.
Palantir’s integrated approach can reduce those problems, but it introduces platform dependence. Once the Ontology, data pipelines and workflows become central to operations, switching costs rise. Some customers will view that as evidence of durability; others will treat it as a reason to avoid deeper adoption.
Cloud and data-platform vendors are formidable competitors
Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud can combine infrastructure, databases, AI services and large enterprise relationships. Snowflake and Databricks are important data and AI platforms. ServiceNow, Salesforce, SAP and Oracle own major workflow or application layers. Accenture and other integrators can assemble custom systems around those products.
These companies have enormous distribution, research budgets and partner ecosystems. They can bundle AI functionality into existing contracts and may accept lower margins in one layer to defend a broader relationship. Palantir must therefore prove that its integrated operating model creates enough value to justify an additional strategic platform.
Palantir’s defense is execution in complex environments. Its software can run across clouds, on-premises infrastructure and edge systems. It can apply detailed permissions to objects and actions. Its deployment teams have experience turning fragmented data into operational applications. The second-quarter results suggest customers are paying for that combination, but competition will intensify as enterprise AI spending expands.
Customer-built systems remain a credible alternative
Some technologically sophisticated organizations prefer to build internally. They may believe that their workflows are too distinctive for a third-party platform or that control over the architecture creates long-term advantage. Open-source models and data tools can reduce the direct software cost of that strategy.
The hidden cost is maintenance. Internal systems require engineers, security reviews, model monitoring, access controls, user support and continuous adaptation as models and infrastructure change. A prototype can be inexpensive; an audited production system operating across thousands of users is not. Palantir’s commercial opportunity expands when customers discover that the build option is slower or more expensive than expected.
The risk is that AI-assisted software development lowers the cost of internal construction over time. If companies can generate applications and integrations more quickly, some may rely less on a broad external platform. Palantir must keep improving its own deployment speed and functionality so that the relative economics remain favorable.
How Durable Are Palantir’s Margins?
An implied GAAP gross margin near 85%, a 47% GAAP operating margin and a 63% operating cash-flow margin indicate a remarkably efficient quarter. The durability of those margins depends on the mix of software, services, implementation labor, cloud costs, hiring and customer incentives.
Palantir’s model historically required substantial engineering support. Forward-deployed engineers work closely with customers, which can make the product more valuable but also more labor-intensive than a self-service software subscription. As the platform becomes easier to deploy and customers reuse established components, revenue can grow faster than personnel cost. The quarter suggests that this scaling is happening.
There are reasons not to extrapolate every margin mechanically. Government projects can have different cost profiles. Rapid hiring could increase operating expenses. The company may invest aggressively to capture demand. Large contracts can affect quarterly mix. Interest income may decline if short-term rates fall, reducing net margin even if operating margin remains strong.
Stock-based compensation is another variable. The expense grew substantially in dollars. If share-based awards continue to rise, adjusted margins can remain high while dilution absorbs part of the economic benefit. Investors should follow diluted share count, not only the income-statement expense.
Palantir’s diluted weighted-average share count was approximately 2.569 billion in the quarter, up from about 2.452 billion a year earlier. That increase of roughly 4.8% means per-share growth was lower than aggregate net-income growth. The business can create significant value while shareholders receive a smaller percentage of the company over time. Both can be true.
Palantir’s Valuation After the Earnings Surge
Valuation is the strongest credible argument against treating the quarter as an uncomplicated investment conclusion. At approximately $158.54 per share late in the morning of August 4, Palantir’s market capitalization was about $407 billion. Suppose revenue continues to grow but slows from 82% to 50%, then to 35%, while investors decide that a lower multiple is appropriate for the more mature growth rate. Earnings can rise as the share price falls. This is the core distinction between business quality and investment outcome.
The bullish valuation argument rests on the idea that ordinary software comparisons are inadequate. Palantir may be building an operating layer for enterprise and government AI, with gross margins, cash conversion and customer expansion that support a much larger future revenue base. If the company sustains rapid growth for several years, today’s sales multiple can decline through revenue expansion rather than a falling share price.
The skeptical argument is that even an exceptional business can be overcapitalized. At a market value above $400 billion, each additional percentage point of expected long-term growth carries enormous value. Small changes in discount rates, competitive assumptions or terminal margins can produce large changes in estimated equity value. The stock therefore remains highly sensitive to any quarter that is merely good rather than extraordinary.
What the market is implicitly asking Palantir to achieve
A valuation near 50 times current-year sales implies more than another strong quarter. It implies that Palantir will maintain high growth as annual revenue moves from roughly $8 billion toward tens of billions, preserve unusually high margins, limit dilution, defend its platform against powerful competitors and convert AI interest into recurring production revenue.
The second-quarter report made that path more plausible. It did not make it certain. The higher the valuation, the more the debate shifts from whether the current numbers are impressive to whether they can remain impressive at a much larger scale.

The Market Reaction Was About More Than an Earnings Beat
Palantir shares initially rose about 14% in extended trading after the August 3 release, according to Reuters. The gain expanded during regular trading on August 4. By late morning, the stock was up more than 26%, substantially exceeding the roughly 10% move that options pricing had indicated before the report, according to an Investopedia analysis of the pre-earnings market.
Several forces likely contributed. First, analysts had to raise revenue and profit estimates. Second, short sellers and investors positioned for a less spectacular report may have been forced to buy shares. Third, the earnings arrived in a market rewarding companies with visible AI revenue rather than distant AI narratives. Fourth, Palantir’s liquidity and index presence allow large institutional flows to amplify price moves.
The rally should not be interpreted as a collective market judgment that every uncertainty was resolved. A stock price reflects the marginal balance of buyers and sellers, not a survey in which investors explain one reason for each trade. Momentum, options hedging, benchmark exposure and changing risk appetite can intensify a move beyond the change in fundamental value that any one analyst would calculate.
The reaction nevertheless conveys useful information. Before the release, the market was not fully pricing the reported acceleration and guidance. After the release, investors assigned a higher probability to sustained enterprise AI adoption and Palantir’s ability to capture it. The move also raised the standard for the next report. A higher price means that more future success is already embedded.
Palantir’s Strongest Bull Case
The strongest positive interpretation begins with the operating evidence rather than the stock chart. Palantir has moved from a debated AI beneficiary to a company reporting measurable AI-linked growth at scale. U.S. commercial revenue is growing at 149%, U.S. government revenue at 90%, total revenue at 93%, and adjusted operating margin is above 60%. The platform occupies a valuable position between raw data and consequential decisions. Models are becoming more capable and more interchangeable, while customers still struggle with data governance, integration and deployment. If model intelligence becomes cheaper, the value may shift toward the operational layer that determines how models are used. Palantir is positioned for that shift.
The company also benefits from a reinforcing loop. More deployments create reusable components and industry knowledge. Faster implementation improves sales conversion. More customers expand the ecosystem and validate the platform. Higher revenue funds product development. Government credibility supports commercial trust, while commercial scale can improve product economics for government customers.
Under this interpretation, the second-quarter numbers are not a temporary AI spending spike. They are evidence that Palantir has found a scalable distribution model for software that converts AI capability into operational value.
Palantir’s Strongest Skeptical Case
The strongest skeptical case does not deny the quality of the quarter. It argues that the valuation requires a level of sustained performance that no company can guarantee. Revenue growth near 100% becomes harder as the base expands. Large contract metrics include options and cancellable amounts. Commercial deployments may require more services and customer support than headline software margins imply. Competitors will improve.
The concentration of growth in the United States creates exposure to procurement, politics and domestic investment cycles. International sovereignty efforts can favor local suppliers. Palantir’s work in defense, immigration and law enforcement can generate reputational and regulatory resistance. Government priorities can change.
Stock-based compensation remains large in absolute dollars, and diluted share count has increased. Adjusted metrics present a cleaner operating picture than GAAP results, even though GAAP results are now strong. Interest income contributes to net profit and may decline with lower short-term rates.
Most importantly, a business can exceed expectations while the stock underperforms if valuation compresses. At approximately 50 times guided revenue, Palantir has little protection from a change in narrative. A quarter with 40% growth and a 45% adjusted margin would be excellent for most software companies. For Palantir, depending on the path of expectations, it could be treated as a major disappointment.
Onsemi’s Q2 2026 Earnings: A Different AI Story
Onsemi’s report arrived minutes before Palantir’s and initially produced a positive after-hours reaction. The semiconductor company beat the midpoint of its own guidance, reported improving demand, generated substantially more free cash flow and issued a third-quarter revenue range that extended the sequential recovery. The quality of the result was constructive. It was not comparable with Palantir’s acceleration.
For the second quarter, onsemi reported revenue of $1.6035 billion, up 9% from $1.4687 billion a year earlier and 6% from $1.5133 billion in the first quarter. GAAP gross margin was 38.4%, non-GAAP gross margin was 39.3%, GAAP operating margin was 16.1% and non-GAAP operating margin was 20.8%. GAAP diluted EPS was $0.56, while adjusted diluted EPS was $0.74.
The company’s official second-quarter earnings release emphasized that operating cash flow increased 150% and free cash flow reached $425.4 million, approximately four times the prior-year amount. Free-cash-flow margin expanded from roughly 7% to 27%. Onsemi repurchased $332 million of shares in the quarter and said year-to-date shareholder returns were approximately 105% of free cash flow.

Power Solutions carried the quarter
Onsemi reports three operating groups. Power Solutions Group revenue increased 19% year over year and 13% sequentially to $829.0 million. Analog and Mixed-Signal Group revenue declined 2% year over year and increased 1% sequentially to $545.7 million. Intelligent Sensing Group revenue rose 7% year over year but declined 3% sequentially to $228.8 million.
The segment pattern supports management’s emphasis on power demand. AI data centers require more than processors and high-bandwidth memory. They need power conversion at multiple stages, from the grid and facility level through racks, boards and individual components. Efficiency becomes increasingly valuable as power density rises because energy lost as heat increases cooling requirements and limits usable computing capacity.
Onsemi sells silicon and silicon-carbide power devices, controllers and related components that can improve conversion efficiency. Chief Executive Hassane El-Khoury said AI data center was the company’s fastest-growing business and that management now expected revenue from that area to more than double in 2026.
The AI data-center contribution is growing from a smaller base than onsemi’s automotive and industrial businesses. That distinction matters. Doubling a small business can improve the growth rate without transforming consolidated revenue immediately. Investors need to follow the dollar contribution, customer concentration and margin of AI-related sales rather than relying only on a percentage growth statement.
The quarter showed operating leverage, not hypergrowth
Onsemi’s adjusted EPS increased about 40% from $0.53 to $0.74 while revenue increased 9%. That is the operating-leverage story highlighted by management. Gross margin improved year over year, cost control supported operating margin, and free cash flow expanded much faster than revenue.
This is encouraging for a cyclical semiconductor supplier emerging from a period of inventory correction and weaker end-market demand. It suggests that earnings can recover faster than sales as factory utilization, product mix and expenses normalize.
The limitation is that cyclical operating leverage works in both directions. When demand weakens, fixed manufacturing costs can pressure margin quickly. Inventory adjustments by automotive and industrial customers can last several quarters. A data-center growth vector improves diversification but does not remove exposure to vehicle production, industrial capital spending, China demand and pricing.
Onsemi’s Third-Quarter Guidance Was Positive but Not Unambiguous
Onsemi guided third-quarter revenue to $1.65 billion to $1.75 billion. The midpoint of $1.70 billion implies approximately 6% sequential growth from the second quarter and was above the roughly $1.67 billion analyst expectation cited in immediate market coverage. Management guided non-GAAP gross margin to 40% to 42%, up from 39.3% in the second quarter, and adjusted EPS to $0.81 to $0.93.
The EPS midpoint of $0.87 was above the approximately $0.84 consensus discussed before the release, although the lower end of the range was below that estimate. Non-GAAP operating expenses were guided to $303 million to $318 million, higher than the roughly $296 million analyst expectation mentioned in the initial earnings discussion. The guidance therefore contained both positive revenue and margin signals and a higher spending outlook.
That mixture helps explain why the first market reaction was less durable than Palantir’s. Onsemi offered evidence of recovery, but it did not produce a decisive upward reset across every metric. The Proposed Synaptics Acquisition Changes the Onsemi Risk Profile
Onsemi’s earnings cannot be evaluated only as a cyclical recovery because the company has also agreed to its largest acquisition. On June 25, 2026, onsemi announced a definitive all-stock agreement to acquire Synaptics in a transaction with an enterprise value of approximately $7 billion. The deal remains subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals and should not be described as completed.
The strategic rationale is to combine onsemi’s power and sensing portfolio with Synaptics’ connectivity and edge-computing products. Management wants a broader position in “physical AI”: systems in vehicles, factories, robots, consumer devices and other environments where sensors, connectivity, processing and power management work together.
The acquisition could expand onsemi’s addressable market and improve gross-margin mix if Synaptics’ higher-value connectivity products perform as expected. It could also create cross-selling opportunities. A customer designing an intelligent device may need power conversion, image sensing, wireless connectivity and edge processing. A combined supplier can offer more of the system.
The risk is execution. All-stock transactions dilute existing ownership by issuing shares to the target’s investors. Integration can distract management, disrupt product road maps and create employee turnover. Expected cost savings or revenue synergies may arrive later than planned. Semiconductor portfolios often have different design cycles, customer bases and manufacturing arrangements, making integration more complex than combining two software subscription businesses.
The proposed deal also arrives while onsemi’s core end markets are recovering unevenly. Management must stabilize automotive and industrial demand, scale AI data-center revenue and prepare for a major integration simultaneously. That may justify higher operating expenses before the full strategic benefit becomes visible.
Reuters described the approximately $7 billion all-stock deal as onsemi’s largest and linked it to demand from AI devices and robotics. The logic is credible, but investors should separate the announced enterprise value from cash paid and should not assume that all projected benefits are guaranteed. Enterprise value includes the market value of equity and the treatment of net debt; it is not a $7 billion cash outlay.
Why Palantir and Onsemi Produced Different Stock Reactions
The two reports carried the same broad AI label but offered different financial signals.
Palantir’s revenue growth accelerated to 93%, its adjusted operating margin reached 62%, management raised annual revenue guidance by roughly $498 million at the midpoint, and the third-quarter outlook exceeded consensus by about 8%. The company’s incremental revenue has very high gross margin, capital expenditure is limited, and cash accumulates rapidly.
Onsemi’s revenue grew 9%, with a stronger 19% increase in Power Solutions. Margins and cash flow improved, and the next-quarter revenue midpoint suggested continued recovery. Yet the company operates capital-intensive manufacturing assets, remains exposed to cyclical end markets and is preparing for a large acquisition. Its AI data-center business is growing quickly but does not yet dominate consolidated revenue.
Valuation changes the interpretation further. Palantir traded at a much more demanding multiple, so its report needed to be extraordinary. Onsemi’s lower multiple offered more room for recovery, but the market also required evidence that the improvement would persist beyond one or two quarters. A modest beat can be enough for a depressed cyclical stock to rise initially, but it may not sustain the gain if investors question expenses, mix or acquisition risk.
Software captures value differently from semiconductors

What the Two Reports Say About the AI Economy
The combined message is that AI spending is broadening beyond graphics processors. Palantir represents the software and decision layer. Onsemi represents part of the power-conversion and sensing infrastructure. Both can benefit from the same expansion in computing, but the timing and economics differ.
During the first phase of the generative-AI investment cycle, spending concentrated on training infrastructure: advanced accelerators, networking, memory and data-center construction. The next phase depends increasingly on deployment. Companies need software that connects models to operations. Data centers need more efficient power systems. Edge devices need sensing, connectivity and local processing.
Palantir’s commercial growth suggests that some enterprises are moving beyond experiments into paid operational deployments. Onsemi’s power-segment growth suggests that infrastructure builders are addressing the electrical demands created by denser computing. Together, the results argue against a narrow view in which only model developers and accelerator vendors can monetize AI.
They do not prove that every AI investment will earn an adequate return. Corporate customers may overestimate near-term productivity gains. Data-center capacity can be built ahead of demand. Power and component suppliers can face oversupply. Software deployments can fail to move beyond initial use cases. The earnings show where spending is occurring, not whether the entire investment cycle will produce attractive returns for every participant.
How Palantir’s 2026 Performance Compares With Its 2025 Base
The scale of Palantir’s acceleration becomes clearer when the second quarter is compared with the full 2025 income statement. Palantir generated $4.475 billion of revenue during all of 2025. Under the updated guidance, it expects approximately $8.154 billion in 2026, meaning the company is on course to add about $3.679 billion of annual revenue in one year. That incremental amount is larger than Palantir’s entire 2024 revenue base.
Government revenue was $2.402 billion in 2025, while commercial revenue was $2.073 billion. In the second quarter of 2026 alone, the company produced $809 million of U.S. government revenue and $764 million of U.S. commercial revenue. The two U.S. businesses together were therefore running at an annualized quarterly pace above $6.2 billion, before including international revenue.
The 2025 operating structure also shows why the current margin expansion is so powerful. Palantir reported a GAAP gross margin of 82% for 2025, GAAP operating income of $1.414 billion and adjusted operating income of $2.254 billion. In the first half of 2026, adjusted operating income had already reached $2.178 billion—nearly the amount generated during the entire previous year. Second-quarter GAAP operating income of $912 million equaled almost two-thirds of full-year 2025 GAAP operating income.
That comparison indicates that profit is scaling faster than revenue. It also shows why a simple historical price-to-earnings ratio can be misleading for a company undergoing a sharp earnings transition. Trailing earnings include quarters produced at a much lower revenue and margin level. Forward estimates better reflect current momentum, but they depend heavily on assumptions about how long the acceleration lasts.
